Great Yarmouth Potteries

by

Lowestoft Cine and Camcorder Club 2005

Originally made as a VHS tape documentary by members of Lowestoft and District Cine and Camcorder Club in 2005.

The VHS tape was copied to DVD by Roy in 2020, and the DVD case cover remade from scratch.

It's a wonderfully nostalgic look back at Great Yarmouth Potteries and begins on Blackfriars Road, introducing the Ancient Town Wall and South East Tower.

It's interesting to see how this part of the town wall looked before the new entrance to the Potteries Buildings was made in it.

It continues with the old entrance and the yard in Trinity Place, to the Old Smokehouse which was built as a lean-to structure against the inside of the medieval town wall.

Visitors can be seen sampling the silky smooth water drawn from the 700-year old freshwater well by "young and fresh" Karen; a mere slip of a lass!

Then comes a tour of the old Herring Smokehouse Museum featuring the smoking chambers with their speats and borks where gutted, salted herring would be hung to smoke. The smell of the smoking chambers and the oily fish lingers to this day.

Lots of maritime memorabilia is displayed here, all of  which was gathered by Ernie, Karen and their children.

Many of Ernie's carvings and paintings and pottery fill the rooms in these ancient buildings.

Then it's upstairs to the tearoom and gift shop area with excerpts from an interview with Ernie himself. A rare event!

Back downstairs into the Kiln Room and Slipcast room where the process of manufacturing a Limited Edition Tankard is described step-by-step.

The film closes with a look at the Great Yarmouth Potteries roof restoration project and how the sale of a Limited Edition Tankard supported the cost. Each Tankard purchaser had their name (or whatever they wanted) engraved on the actual tiles used in the restoration.

The running time of the DVD is 19 minutes.

Posted in a strong corrugated card sleeve, similar to that used by Amazon etc.
